How Much Office Space Does a 50-Person Company Need?

50 employees does not necessarily mean you need 5,000 sq. ft. of office space.

That is one of the first things companies discover when they start looking for a new workspace.

The traditional approach is simple:

Number of employees × space per employee = office size

But in reality, choosing the right office is rarely that simple.

A 50-person technology company, a consulting firm, a financial services company, and a growing startup can all have completely different workspace requirements.

The better question is not:

“How many square feet do 50 employees need?”

It is:

“What kind of workspace will work best for this business today and as it grows?”

A practical starting point

For many businesses, a 50-person team may require somewhere around 2,500 to 5,000 sq. ft.

But this should be treated as a planning range, not a fixed rule.

Your actual requirement depends on:

  • Seating density
  • Hybrid or full-time working
  • Number of meeting rooms
  • Private cabins
  • Collaboration areas
  • Reception and client areas
  • Pantry and breakout areas
  • Storage and IT requirements
  • Employee movement
  • Future expansion

Two companies with exactly 50 employees can therefore require very different amounts of space.

Let’s take three 50-person companies

Imagine three companies with the same headcount.

Company 1: A technology startup

Most employees work from laptops.

The company has limited private cabins and doesn’t have frequent client meetings.

Its priority is:

Maximum efficiency + controlled occupancy cost.

A workspace of approximately 2,500–3,000 sq. ft. might work well, depending on the workplace design.

Company 2: A consulting company

The company regularly meets clients and needs:

  • Meeting rooms
  • Private cabins
  • Collaboration areas
  • Reception
  • More formal client-facing space

Its requirement may move closer to 3,500–4,500 sq. ft.

Company 3: A growing enterprise team

The company has 50 employees today.

But the management expects to reach 70–80 employees over the next 12–18 months.

Taking exactly enough space for today’s headcount may create a problem very soon.

A larger workspace or a building with expansion options may therefore make more sense.

Same headcount. Different workspace decision.

Don’t forget the next 18 months

This is one of the most overlooked factors when leasing an office.

Suppose your company has 50 employees today but plans to hire 25 more.

You could take a workspace designed exactly for 50 people.

It may look financially efficient today.

But six months later, you may have to:

  • Add more space
  • Negotiate with the operator
  • Move to another floor
  • Reconfigure the office
  • Or move the entire company

Every one of those decisions has a cost.

So instead of asking:

“Can this office accommodate 50 people?”

ask:

“Can this workspace support where the company is going?”

That small change in thinking can make a big difference.

Office size is only one part of the decision

Imagine two workspaces.

Workspace A

3,000 sq. ft.
₹8,000 per seat
Limited expansion
Longer walk from the metro

Workspace B

3,800 sq. ft.
₹9,000 per seat
Better expansion options
Better employee accessibility

Workspace A looks cheaper.

But is it actually the better business decision?

That depends on the company.

If most employees use public transport, accessibility could be important.

If the company expects rapid hiring, expansion capacity could be important.

If client meetings are frequent, meeting infrastructure could matter more than raw square footage.

This is why price alone cannot determine workspace suitability.

What should a 50-person company actually define before searching?

Before looking at properties, define the requirement.

For example:

RequirementExample
Current team50
Expected growth20–30%
Budget₹8,500/seat
Metro priorityHigh
Meeting rooms4
Private cabins2
Move-in timeline60 days
Workspace typeManaged / Coworking
LocationNoida Sector 62

Now the office search becomes much more meaningful.

Instead of asking:

“Which offices are available?”

you can ask:

“Which available workspaces actually fit this requirement?”

What LeaseInADay looks at

At LeaseInADay, we believe that finding an office should begin with the business requirement, not simply the property.

A workspace can be evaluated across multiple dimensions, including:

Capacity Fit

Can the workspace comfortably accommodate the current team?

Commercial Fit

Does the cost work within the company’s financial boundary?

Transport & Accessibility

How practical is the workspace for employees travelling to it?

Growth & Expansion

Can the workspace support the company’s expected growth?

Building Intelligence

What does the building offer beyond the advertised rent and amenities?

Micro-Market

Does the surrounding business ecosystem make sense for the company?

Operational Requirements

Does the workspace support the way the company actually operates?

The result should not simply be:

“This property is available.”

It should help answer:

“Is this property suitable for my business?”

The cheapest office may not be the cheapest decision

This is an important distinction.

Suppose Workspace A saves ₹500 per seat every month.

For 50 employees, that looks like a saving of:

₹25,000 per month.

But if the cheaper workspace creates:

  • Higher employee commute friction
  • Poor expansion options
  • More frequent relocation
  • Insufficient meeting space
  • Operational inconvenience

the apparent saving may not represent the real business value.

The real question is:

What does this workspace cost the business—not just what does it cost per seat?

So, how much space does a 50-person company need?

A reasonable starting point may be:

2,500–5,000 sq. ft.

But there is no universal answer.

The right requirement depends on:

People + Workplace Model + Operations + Budget + Location + Growth

That’s why two companies with 50 employees should not necessarily receive the same workspace recommendation.

The better way to search for an office

Don’t start with:

“I need a 5,000 sq. ft. office.”

Start with:

“I have 50 employees, this is my budget, this is how my team works, this is where they travel from, this is my growth plan, and this is when I need to move.”

Then evaluate the workspace against that requirement.

That is a fundamentally different way of approaching office leasing.

The LeaseInADay philosophy

An office is not just a property.

It is part of how a business operates.

The right workspace affects:

  • Employee experience
  • Operating cost
  • Accessibility
  • Collaboration
  • Growth
  • Client experience
  • And ultimately, the business itself.

So the goal shouldn’t simply be to find an office.

The goal should be to find the workspace that makes the most business sense.
